Our family has fond memories of visiting this restaurant back when it was just a humble roadside eatery. It has since moved into a proper, air-conditioned restaurant space—but thankfully, the food remains every bit as delicious as it was two decades ago. The Bak Kueh is exactly how we remember it—richly flavoured and perfectly stir-fried with that signature wok hei aroma. Their steamed fish with ginger and cabbage is light, fresh, and comforting, just like the old days. And of course, no visit would be complete without their Hokkien Mee—thick, chewy noodles coated in dark soy sauce, paired with pork lard and fresh greens, a true local favourite. The oyster omelette, while slightly pricier, is still fluffy and generously filled with plump oysters. It’s definitely a treat we wouldn’t mind splurging on now and then. Overall, the quality and taste have been consistently preserved despite the move and passing of time. Prices remain reasonable for the portions and flavors served. It’s heartwarming to see a family favorite continue thriving—both in taste and in spirit.

Shin Ong Lai Restaurant is a great spot for those looking to enjoy a satisfying meal at fair prices. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, from classic Chinese staples to unique house specials, making it a solid choice for group dining or casual family meals. However, it is advisable to make a reservation due to it’s popularity. Their dishes stand out for both flavor and presentation. Portion sizes are generous, service is quick, and the overall ambience is clean and comfortable. With its reasonable pricing and broad selection, Shin Ong Lai delivers good value and plenty of options for all kinds of appetites.

After many years at the backlash of Chow Kit Road, the restaurant has now upgraded itself into a full fledge proper Chinese restaurant. Nice atmosphere and well laid out. As there were only 2 of us, we ordered the signature Fish Head Noodles, which I had grown up to love. The Fish Head did not disappoint with its familiar fragrant and umami pack soup spice with Chinese wine. It definitely brought back good old memories.

This Chinese restaurant is seriously underrated – reservations are a must! Hidden in Lorong Tiong Nam 3, this place has been our go-to spot for family dinners since before the MCO! And let me say this — it has never disappointed. A friendly tip: Make sure to book a table in advance, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant runs in seating time slots, so walk-ins are usually turned away (yes, it gets THAT full!). Recommended Dishes – You’ll keep coming back! Salted Egg Chicken A must-order! Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with a rich salted egg coating that’s full of flavor. Not the cheap, powdery kind – this one hits different! Marmite Pork Belly Perfect for those who love sweet-savory dishes. The pork belly is crispy and tender, coated with a sticky Marmite glaze – super appetizing with white rice. Signature Steamed Song Fish Head Great for sharing. The fish is fresh, steamed to perfection, and topped with soy sauce and garlic – no fishy smell at all, just pure umami goodness. Stir-fried Fragrant Pork Belly If you love strong flavors, this is for you. The pork belly is wok-fried with fragrant spices – rich, punchy, and very satisfying. Special Fried Oyster Omelette (Oh Jian) Crispy edges, soft center, and loaded with fresh oysters. Dip it into their homemade chili sauce for the full experience! Golden Salted Egg Prawn Balls Cute presentation and big flavor! Juicy prawns wrapped in a golden salted egg yolk crust – crunchy, creamy, and very addictive. Hokkien Mee (KL Style) Deep, rich wok hei flavor – smoky and savory. A little chili mixed in takes it to another level! Claypot Pork Belly with Tendons Rich in collagen! The pork tendons are soft and gelatinous, cooked in a flavorful claypot sauce. Ideal for sharing in cooler weather. Steamed Patin Fish (清蒸巴丁鱼) Light and delicate – the fish is fresh, and the ginger-soy dressing keeps it clean and fragrant. A great choice for those who prefer something lighter. ⸻ Overall: Consistently delicious food Fast service Huge variety of dishes Reasonable prices Perfect for family dinners or group gatherings Just remember to make a reservation, especially on the weekend – or you’ll probably miss out!

Shin Ong Lai once operated as a street stall with folded tables and plastic stools. Today, it is housed in a clean, newly renovated 3 storey building. We came early for a Sunday lunch to beat the crowd. Claypot braised pork tendon (猪筋) & belly pork is a signature dish - the tendon has a chewy, gelatinous texture that gives a silky mouthfeel. The pork balances the tendon’s gelatin with meaty flavour and the added cloves of garlic that has been lightly cooked gives a delightful crunch with each bite. The patin fish was delicately prepared with just ginger and soy, highlighting its natural freshness, while the buttered mantis came packed in bold, buttery flavour providing a perfect contrast. Unlike the starchy, gooey versions elsewhere, the oyster omelette here is basically plump, juicy oysters pan fried with eggs-simple yet perfect. The stir-fried chives with kidney and intestine, accented with a touch of cooking wine, make this dish quite interesting & unique. The Hokkien mee is easily my favourite. With just the right amount of ‘wok hei,’ it completely lifted the dish and made my day. Overall, very consistent quality and good value for money. Always busy, so do turn up early.

The food at this restaurant is impressive , the kind that pulls you straight down memory lane. There’s a real yesteryear authenticity to it, that classic “korcha bi” flavour which is getting harder to find these days. We ordered seven dishes, along with a plate of fried rice and a serving of tai lok mee. Every dish was solid, and the fried rice was especially outstanding ,full of wok hei and beautifully balanced. The tai lok mee, though, was a little underwhelming ….. not bad, just lacking that oomph. Still, overall I came away impressed. The prices are reasonable, and while it can get noisy (like most Chinese restaurants), the food more than makes up for it ,you just tune everything else out. I really like the taste profile here, and I’d be more than happy to return the next time I’m in the Chow Kit area.
